This is Will

It as 2007 and Will Carlough, a developer at Meetup.com, was excited.

A new edition of the multiplayer fighting game Super Smash Brothers was about to be released for Nintendo GameCube. The game allowed players to fight as many different Nintendo characters including stalwarts like Mario and Peach, and less known characters like Ness and Captain Falcon. This new version of Smash Bros was set to contain Nana and Popo, characters from a relatively obscure NES game called Ice Climber, a game Will played frequently as a child.

He began playing a version of Ice Climbers formatted formatted for his iPhone as a way to pass the time before Super Smash Bros release. Then, one fateful day, he saw the documentary King of Kong, which features two people both trying to set the all-time high score for Donkey Kong, on a website called Twin Galaxies. The rest is history.

The 2M point high score

Tune into this hilarious episode to hear about:

  • How Will was able to set two high score records for different versions of Ice Climbers (NES and Arcade)
  • How competition with other players / record challengers both motivated his efforts and helped him identify ways to improve his game
  • What allowed him to perfect his Ice Climber gameplay and his strategy for boosting his score
  • The amazing and hilarious story of how Will's records were challenged and how he fired back
  • The games he's personally developed for iOS and Android, including Blong, WaterGate (see a game review and Math is Stupid
  • How his friends are now setting high score records in his own
  • Will's semi-finalist placing in the Nintendo World Championships
  • The beautiful French girl in LA who got away (If you're reading this now, Will is really single now and would love to hear from you: @unclehighbrow
