Psychologist and author, Dr. Sarah Michaud stops by to chat about her recent book Co-Crazy: One Psychologist’s Recovery from Codependency and Addiction. We ask her the following questions:

How would you define codependency and co-crazy?

Why do you think it’s so hard for some people to prioritize their own mental health before attempting to help others?

On Page 87, you wrote: Moving from thinking it is about everyone else to knowing it is about me = the beginning of healing. Can you tell us how you were able to make this important mental adjustment?

One Page 107, you wrote: As a child I felt responsible for my father’s happiness and felt controlled by him, which led to crippling fear of upsetting people – manifesting as the relentless low-grade chronic hum of anxiety. That’s a perfect description of what I refer to as the beehive. How do we calm the beehive?

Learning to set boundaries is a crucial skill. Voicing and being firm with what you’re willing to tolerate from others helps prevent resentment, anger, and confusion. On page 159, you talk about how setting boundaries takes courage, self-love, trust, and belief in your sanity and serenity. Where should people start if they’re having trouble drawing that line in the sand?
