Welcome to Episode 72 of the “Reel Chat Podcast.” This week we continue our countdown of Empire Magazine’s Top 100 Greatest Movies of all time.
Endlessly re-watchable and effortlessly entertaining, James Cameron’s gritty 1984 sleeper-hit “The Terminator” is a true staple of the science fiction genre. Through the story of an emotionless, virtually indestructible cyborg that will literally stop at nothing to destroy its targets, Cameron is able to tap into some of mankind’s most basic fears, creating a visceral and truly frightening “tech noir” that hasn’t lost any of its terrifying luster. Even in Hollywood’s current climate of massive budget, computer-generated summer tent-poles, “The Terminator” continues to remind audiences and would-be filmmakers, that all one really needs to create explosive entertainment, is talent, ingenuity, and courage. Well, all that and a really, really big Austrian bodybuilder.
Joining your Terminator loving host Adam Stolfo is Reel Chat regulars Andrew McCaskill and Penny Jelly as well as returning special guest Jesse O’Brien. Join the team as they discuss their love of director James Cameron’s earlier works, it’s fabulous lead stars, the film’s origins and screenplay, eighties horror movie tropes, composer Brad Fiedel’s electronic synth wales, as well as next year’s currently untitled “Terminator 6” film.
This is of course a very special episode of Reel Chat, as it marks the first time the show has revisited a film that’s already been covered – all the way back in May 2015 (Episode 22.0).
So does “The Terminator” deserve it’s spot in the Top 100? And is position number 92 where it belongs?
