Wir schreiben Donnerstag, den 11. Februar 2016 und seit heute Nachmittag (MEZ) kann als gesichert gelten, dass es der Menschheit gelungen ist, Gravitationswellen nachzuweisen, und damit eine Tür in eine völlig neue Astronomie aufgestoßen zu haben.
Ich hatte das Glück, einen der über 1000 beteiligten Wissenschaftler ans Telefon zu bekommen und mir von Reinhard Prix vom Albert-Einstein-Institut in Hannover (dem Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik) erklären zu lassen, was Gravitationswellen sind, wie sie entstehen, wie man sie misst und was man mit ihnen – beziehungsweise dem Wissen um sie – anstellen kann.
Wir reden unter anderem über Gravitation, die Relativitätstheorie, Albert Einstein, Neutronensterne, schwarze Löcher, den Laserinterferometer Advanced LIGO, die Raumzeit, Galileo und Teleskope.
