A common longer time symptom or condition after weight loss surgery is reactive hypoglycaemia or post-prandial hypoglycaemia. It is different to diabetes in any form, but can happen due to the altered release of hormones after weight loss surgery.
Reactive hypoglycaemia is where the body releases too much of the hormone insulin after bariatric surgery. Due to the smaller portion of carbohydrates consumed after bariatric surgery, when too much insulin is released it can cause too much digested sugar to enter the cells.
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:

  • Shakiness.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Sweating.
  • Hunger.
  • A fast or uneven heartbeat.
  • Feeling weak or tired.
  • Feeling irritable or anxious.
  • Headache

Today I go through what this condition is, how to prevent it through some dietary strategies and how to treat through diet. It is strongly recommended you seek individual advice from your own bariatric dietitian and medical practitioner to discuss treatment for your case.
