#70: For our 70th episode, we had the privilege to sit down and chat with Peer Support Expert and Wellness Coach, Kiola Raines (she/her). When asked about her personal recovery, Kiola says that for her, it's all about living her journey out loud. And although it can be daunting, she has made it her journey's foundation to put herself out there and get into recovery spaces. This courage and fearlessness is exemplified by the story of how she came to be a guest on this very podcast!
Tune into the episode to learn more about Kiola, including:
- Why she incorporates the skeletal and muscle system into her meetings: to remind everyone that underneath, we all look the same.
- Why she decided to 'break her anonymity' within 24 hours of sobriety, and the positive environment this created.
- What she's coined 'New Age Recovery': all the newer spaces where folks can recover out loud authentically and be unapologetically proud of their journeys.
- The times when she's felt burnout and the practices she's developed to recognize these feelings and not overextend herself.
- Her experience growing up in a result-oriented culture, where seeking out therapy was not spoken about. She started her journey in hopes that her family and friends would see that it's ok to admit you're struggling and to seek support.
- How Kiola honors the generations before her that lived through trauma and in a survival culture: by giving herself permission to heal and be open about her journey, because her relatives didn't have that access.
- What she would tell her former self: once you're willing to step away from the darkness, you can have a life full of light and genuine happiness. We are all worthy and capable of it.
