Ursprünglich hatte das Tourismusamt sich das Ziel gesetzt, in diesem Jahr 12 Millionen internationale Touristen nach Taiwan zu holen, was dem Niveau vor der COVID-19-Pandemie entsprochen hätte. Doch Anfang April erklärte Verkehrsminister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材), sein Ministerium gehe für das Jahr 2024 derzeit nur noch von 10 Millionen internationalen Besuchern aus, da China an seinem Reiseverbot für Taiwan festhalte. Chiu Bihui und Ilon Huang sprechen heute in Schlagzeilen der Woche, u.a. darüber, wie Taiwan internationale Touristen nach Taiwan bringen will und welche Herausforderungen es dabei geben könnte.
Im Jahr 2019, vor der COVID-19-Pandemie, besuchten 11,86 Millionen internationale Touristen Taiwan, davon kamen 2,71 Millionen aus China, 2,16 Millionen aus Japan, 1,59 Millionen aus Hongkong und 1,24 Millionen aus Südkorea, so die Statistik des Tourismusamtes.
