It starts out innocently. You post a dating profile and someone smart and funny responds. There’s back and forth and they suggest moving to email. It feels like the start of a connection. Then, an urgent note: a family member needs medical care, an ex has made off with the savings, a child is stranded in another country. Even then, you’re thinking, that could happen. And they need my help.

And that’s how the scam starts.

One in five Americans ages 50-64 have used a dating app, including my friend Danny Kelley who’s agreed to share his dating scam story with us.
