Send us a text Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavior condition in which your child displays a continuing pattern of uncooperative, defiant and sometimes hostile behavior toward people in authority. This behavior often disrupts your child’s normal daily functioning, including relationships and activities within their family and at school. The majority of children and teens who have ODD also have at least one other mental health condition, including: Attention-deficit hyperactivity/disorder (ADHD). Anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Learning differences. Mood disorders, such as depression. Impulse control disorders. About 30% of children with ODD develop a more serious behavior condition called conduct disorder. ODD behaviors can continue into adulthood if ODD isn’t properly diagnosed and treated. ODD most commonly affects children and teenagers, but it can also affect adults. It most commonly begins by age 8. Some children outgrow ODD or receive proper treatment for it, while others continue to have symptoms through adulthood. Boys are more likely to have ODD in their younger years than girls. But teenagers are affected equally. Your child is more likely to develop ODD if they have the following risk factors: A history of child abuse or neglect. A parent or caregiver who has a mood disorder or who has substance or alcohol use disorders. Exposure to violence. Inconsistent discipline and lack of adult supervision. Instability in their family, such as divorce, moving to different houses often and changing schools frequently. Financial problems in their family. Parents who have or have had ODD, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or behavioral problems. Treatment may include: Cognitive-behavioral therapy. Recall the point at which you felt most helpless. That feeling of helplessness was a reckoning with your weakness and your basic inability to control your circumstances, because if you could, you certainly would escape them. (Many of us continue trying our hand at escapism every day.) Then, in the midst of this reckoning with your helplessness, you were gifted peace. Realizing your inability to change your present circumstances of suffering, you let go of striving to do so. And when you did, you breathed a sigh of relief at the peace that washed over you. Send us a text Here’s a terrible fact I wish I could unlearn: Countless men—otherwise respectable husbands and fathers and brothers and boyfriends, perhaps even yours—never bother to wash between the cheeks when they bathe. And that’s if they get around to bathing at all—plenty of men rarely do. Neither are men cleaning up when they use the toilet: not the seat, not the floor, not where the sun don’t shine. When it comes to hygiene habits, some gender disparities come to light. Not only are women (81%) more likely than men (72%) to describe themselves as very clean rather than just clean, they are also more likely to consider the tested hygiene habits very important. While the majority (98%) of men and women agree that washing their hands after using the toilet is important, women (91%) are more likely than men (84%) to say that this behavior is very important. Similarly, women are more likely to say that changing their undergarments every day (88% vs. 78% of men), changing their clothes every day (73% vs. 63%), and washing their hands after using public transportation (74% vs. 66%) are crucial behaviors. These gender differences are also apparent for habits like sanitizing mobile devices, living spaces, and work spaces – hygiene practices which roughly a third of men do not seem to find important (33%, 24%, and 27%, respectively). Send us a text Small mistakes are a normal part of life and can be an opportunity for growth. While it's important to learn from mistakes and avoid repeating them, it's unproductive to dwell on them. Instead, it's better to focus on improving and moving forward. Here are some tips for getting over past mistakes: Understand your mistakes, Take time to grieve, Express your feelings, Accept your past mistakes, and Learn from your mistakes. We feel nervous because it's a natural bodily response to perceived threats, triggering the "fight or flight" response, which releases adrenaline and prepares our body to either confront a danger or escape from it; this can happen in situations like public speaking, job interviews, or any situation where we feel uncertain or under pressure, even if the threat isn't actually life-threatening. Evolutionary benefit: This response evolved to help us survive in dangerous situations by increasing alertness and physical readiness. Physical symptoms: When nervous, you might experience a rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, dry mouth, or butterflies in your stomach - all due to the release of adrenaline. Perception matters: Even if a situation isn't objectively dangerous, if your brain perceives it as threatening, it can trigger the nervous response. Normal vs. anxiety disorder: While occasional nervousness is normal, when it becomes excessive or interferes with daily life, it could be a sign of an anxiety disorder.
