In this episode, I’m giving you a little history lesson and a deep dive into the development of our modern food industry and the USA nutrition guidelines. It’s probably no surprise that the nutrition advice and the food pyramid we learned about growing up hasn’t really set Americans up to achieve better health results (if anything, rates of heart disease and diabetes have only gone up…) but so much of this misguided nutrition information has made its way into schools, doctors offices, magazines, and social media, creating lots of confusion around what will actually make us healthier. I hope after listening to this episode you’ll be motivated to learn more about how food actually impacts your body, and think twice next time you hear that too much real food like eggs can raise your cholesterol levels while a bowl of honey nut cheerios promises to lower your cholesterol and build a healthy heart!

Listen in to hear me share:

  • The research (and the scientist) that started the low fat diet craze
  • How the US government started to back the low fat movement in hopes of reducing heart disease
  • How the food industry started adding sugar to foods when they took out the fat
  • What actually happens to women when they start going low fat
  • How laws around food labels changed in the 1970’s to make highly processed food labels less transparent
  • The myths around the mediterranean diet
  • Why you should questioning conventional nutrition advice
  • The influence of big food companies
  • The confusion of intuitive eating in this world filled with confusing nutrition advice
  • + so much more!
