What if we saw all our unwanted situations, emotions, and circumstances this way? What if we could climb through the secret window of our own lives and deal with difficulties from a more calm, grounded, and peaceful room in our minds? Would we not then be able to invite each demanding emotion, each pending responsibility, each expectant relationship in our life to sit with us for a moment?

Rather than feel overwhelmed by the noise coming from outside of us, we could prepare ourselves a little every day to meet with those demands - and one by one, listen and tend to them as an individual. I believe all pain, challenges, and losses wish to be met by the fireside of Love - it is your warmth they are after. And that doesn't mean you set up a spare room for them to stay as long as they like - remember it's your home, your body, your heart, your mind - but if they are welcomed, they will not break your doors down ;)

You don’t have to walk back into your life

through the front door.

You can slip through the hedge

and climb up the ivy

that has overgrown the small

window around the back.

It’s always ajar -

cracked open to let the light in

and to allow the damp darkness

to find its way out.

You can crawl between the paint-flecked panes

and let yourself into your own home

while the guests and visitors clamber against your door;

their needs and pains

splintering timber with their weight.

And when you have found yourself

a place upon the floorboards

that is quiet and still -

you can take off your shoes

and have your tea,

and rest for a while.

And only when you are ready -

can you invite each guest,

each responsibility,

each seeker of your attention,

to sit beside you.

And one by one,

they can drink their tea

and spill their words in your company.

And one by one,

you can offer them time

to be seen and heard and felt.

And one by one,

they can leave again

knowing that they are not

the owner of this home

but merely a seeker of its warmth.

You do not need to let them all in,

nor fight your way through -

you can take your time,

you can bare your feet,

you can drink your tea

and only when you feel ready -

is each allowed a moment of your time.
