Twenty-three-year-old singer Selena Quintanilla Pérez was a Mexican American Tejano superstar on the verge of an even higher level of fame when she was shot and killed on March 31, 1995. She achieved international fame with her band Selena y Los Dinos as well as for her solo career both in Spanish and her crossover into the mainstream English market. At the height of her career in 1994, Selena won a Grammy for Best Mexican American Album, making her the first female Tejano artist to win the award. Selena’s father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., would appoint 32-year-old Yolanda Saldívar as president of Selena's fan club and manager of Selena’s two existing boutiques Selena Etc. Yoland would become a close and trusted confidant of Selena but after being promoted to manager of Selena Etc. things began to unravel. Evidence would be found by the Quintanilla family that Yoland had embezzled $60,000 from both Selena’s fan club and the boutiques. After Yoland was fired, Selena went to The Days Inn Motel located in Corpus Christi, Texas to collect financial records that Yolonda was in possession of when things took a deadly turn. Tragically on the morning of March 31,1995, Yoland fatally shot Selena with a .38 special revolver. Selena’s murder sent shockwaves through the Latino community, and her fans around the world mourned the singer’s passing. So, was Selena murdered b/c an employee had been caught embezzling or was there something more sinister at play hidden from the naked eye.
