The story of Patrick Pandemics of fear or waves of love? “When I was about 32 (after only 4-5 years of working with clients in sessions) I talked to a 38 year old man by phone. He was smart, funny, kind and a talented creative gay man living in San Francisco. He was also HIV positive. Patrick was just out of an abusive relationship with an ex-boyfriend and also dealing with conflict, and cruelty that had been going on for years connected with his family. His Bible thumping, fire and brimstone Christian parents did not approve of his “lifestyle” (as if one’s sexual orientation could be classified as a lifestyle...). He had been thrown out of his home at a young age by his parents, and his emotional body was still understandably wounded. He was still close to his sister, but had no relationship with his parents. I did my best to work on convincing Patrick of his value and that his family was completely wrong and coming from a place of fear. It was not easy to attempt to break him of his deep seated beliefs that he was unworthy of love. I reminded him that he was more than just worthy, it was his right. He was open to hearing this but he did not believe it yet and considering his background, it was no surprise that he felt this way...”
