39. Taking care of yourself - easier said done as Supermom

This episode of the Special Needs Supermom podcast is all about shutting off a supermom brain and why it is important our kids don’t dial or have access to the 24/7 supermom-to-the-rescue-hotline all the time.

I’m a firm believer of quality-me time. But to be honest that’s not the easiest thing for me as a special needs Supermom belonging to the house of Hufflepuff.

Let me explain why.

Taking care of others is who I am. I’ve always took care. First, I had to take care of my parents making them smile again after my young brother died unexpectedly after a medical procedure at the age of 1.5. I was 2.5 years old. Not my responsibility you might say, but seriously how could I not try to make them happy again?

And ever since.

I’ve always been highly sensitive and big believer of fighting injustice and standing up and fight for those that can. Am now 45. And as a special needs Supermom my heart only got bigger.

And I am proud of it. But it is always what can get us supermoms in trouble. Because the sight effect is that it’s hard to tune out. When my kids are in stress, I am in stress. When my kids are in pain, I’m in pain. When they are unhappy…. See the trap?

The funny thing is. I do have quality me-time. Went to a Bob Ross exhibit last week out of the blue. Had a 3-hour long bath. The problem? It doesn’t shut off my brain. Doesn’t numb my 24/7 availability mom radar.

The good thing is I do recognize the symptoms nowadays. I’ve listed a few red flags in this podcast episode. Recognize some of them? Then, maybe like me it is time you find something to switch off your brain. So you can truly recharge and stay that Special Needs Supermom.

We not only need to find something that shuts off our brain, we also must learn how to say no. Realize it is ok to say no. Even to your kids. Especially to your kids.

Hope this podcast helps you say it is ok to say no and realize what you need to recharge. Enjoy via your favorite platform like YouTube, Apple, Spotify, Google, Amazon and more.
