Twentieth Century Fox released The Barbarian and the Geisha to theaters on September 30, 1958. John Huston directs the film which stars John Wayne, Eiko Ando, and Sam Jaffe.

‘The Barbarian and the Geisha’ Movie Summary

1856, Man of honor proud American journeyman Townsend Harris, is sent to Far East land of the rising sun Japan as the first US Consul General alongside his interpreter colleague encountering hostilities from the locals from the moment they had arrived.

Sent on a mission by the President to deliver a treaty Townsend refuses to hand it over to anyone other than the authority it is intended, this angers the townsfolk incisively even though the two visitors have been allocated a seaside shack a temporary residence.

Meanwhile, Townsend falls in love with a beautiful adoring 16 year old Geisha beginning as a father daughter like relationship developing full circle by the finale.

Directed by John Huston, limp storytelling compared to his harder compelling previous films, pastel cinematography is beautiful however as quaint and intriguing as the story is, the question of John Wayne being miscast remains rife.
