George Y. Massenburg is a Grammy® award-winning recording engineer, producer, educator and designer of definitive high-resolution audio equipment. He is best known for inventing the parametric equalizer, a key part of modern recording, and third-generation audio console control automation. He has worked on over 400 records in the past 50 years. His work includes recordings by #EarthWindandFire , #LindaRonstadt, #LittleFeat #JamesTaylor, Phil Collins, Randy Newman, Lyle Lovett, Herbie Hancock and many others. In 1990, he won a Grammy® for Best Engineered Non-Classical Record for Ronstadt's "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind".
He was awarded an at-the-time rare Technical Grammy® in1998 for his contributions to modern recording technology. In 2024, he won his latest Grammy® for "Best Immersive Audio" album for The Diary of #AliciaKeys. Between 2010 and 2013 he was Associate Professor of Sound Recording and Video Production in the Graduate Studies program for 13 years at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Massenburg has worked primarily in Paris, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Nashville.
He is the Chief Technical Officer of METalliance (the Music Engineering Technical Alliance), and an Associate Professor of Sound Recording at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at the #Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Valencia Spain; and the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN. Massenburg founded GML LLC in 1982 in Los Angeles, California designing analog audio processing equipment; and Massenburg DesignWorks, which designs high-resolution software plug-ins for #ProTools, VST, AU, Sonnox, Universal Audio, and TC Electronic platforms.
