Post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that can develop in some individuals after recovering from a gastrointestinal infection, such as food poisoning or a bacterial or viral infection. The importance of the patient's pre-existing health or terrain lies in the fact that individuals with a compromised or already sensitive gastrointestinal system may be more susceptible to developing post-infectious IBS.
