It can be exciting to set a goal for yourself that you really want to achieve, and when you start to see progress towards reaching it….nothing can be more rewarding.

But have you ever felt yourself starting to obsess about wanting to achieve something? I’m talking the “can’t stop thinking about it all day and night" kind of thinking. When does it cross the line from being a healthy pursuit of a goal, and it moves into perfectionism?

This week’s episode of The Breakthrough Emotional Eating podcast I discuss emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy mindset when striving for a goal, and avoiding self-destructive behaviors associated with perfectionism.

Is it consistency or perfectionism? You will learn:

  • The distinction between consistency and perfectionism lies in the mindset one adopts while working towards a goal.

  • Consistency involves being reliable and steady in behaviors, whereas perfectionism entails setting excessively high expectations for flawless performance.

  • Consistent progress is gradual and acknowledges setbacks as part of the journey, while perfectionism leads to self-criticism and unrealistic standards.

  • Strategies for adopting a healthier mindset include setting realistic goals, focusing on progress rather than perfection, learning from setbacks, practicing self-compassion, and controlling perfectionistic thoughts.

  • Ultimately, prioritizing self-care and recognizing when perfectionism becomes detrimental are crucial for achieving sustainable progress and avoiding negative emotional patterns like emotional eating.
