As incredibly unique as the vast swathe of humanity seems to be, the fact is that the amount of genetic variation between any two people is staggeringly small. According to Phase 1 of the Human Genome Project, all of the human beings currently populating the earth are 99.9% identical at the DNA level. This serves as a refreshing reminder that despite our seemingly insurmountable differences, we’re all made of the same stuff. But—even as we celebrate this great unity—we must recognize that there are, hidden among us, an undefined “Other”. A separate species that lurks not in the shadows but within the masses of humanity; mimicking us almost, but not quite, to perfection. Who are these Others and what do they want with us?
