Long ago, on a dark and stormy night, two wandering Podcasters found themselves in the same inn. Nicholas of clan Goathoof was the first to arrive. With him he brought the Goathoof family banner – a depiction of British actor Timothy Dalton dressed as the Green Power Ranger. Shortly after Nicholas finished his fourteenth round of sake, Mike, the one-hundred-and-eighty-second head of clan Blink, crashed through the main window of the quiet inn. Nicholas, abandoning his Star Wars Destiny Card game – even though he was about to resolve the special for two Thermal Detonators and get off six damage to all opponents – rushed to the aid of his new roommate. Brushing the glass off of his armor, Mike stood up, grabbed his podcasting equipment and calmly requested the innkeeper to bring him sake. Curious, Nicholas joined his fellow Podcast wanderer.
Though the two sat in silence for the first hour, by the twenty-second round of Sake, they had begun to develop a rapport. They bonded over a mutual love of Jidaigeki film, a Japanese genre that influenced filmmakers including Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarintino, and George Lucas. Generally set between 1500-1900, Jidaigeki films are Japanese period pieces, often retelling folk stores as old as the settings themselves. Throughout the night, the two belligerently discussed the genre’s classics, obscure gems, and anime adaptations.
The two began their conversation with Vendetta of a Samurai. Released in 1952, this retelling of a famous legend was written by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, and stars much of the cast from the yet-to-be-released Seven Samurai. Despite its star studded backing, this film is largely forgotten – pretty much unavailable save for a bizarrely translated version on YouTube. Is Vendetta of a Samurai a forgotten classic or was history right to discard this like so much genre trash? Will Mike and Nicholas make it alive with their livers unscathed? Tune in to find out.
