Summary:
Miss Bingley is pestering Darcy while he is writing a long letter to his sister. She is constantly interrupting him with “compliments” about his writing. Her flattery falls flat however as Darcy is too involved with his text to care. She then tells him that Mr Bingley’s writing is horrid, which then causes Bingley to join the conversation. Darcy and Bingley then have a brief argument about writing which then turns into a slight against Bingley’s general haphazard style of living Minute to Minute. Elizabeth comes to defend Bingley a little, but this then turns into a hypothetical debate between her and Darcy. Things get out of hand, and Bingley end it by saying that they can continue if they please, but only once he is out of the room. Bingley leaves but Elizabeth recommends that Darcy goes back to his letter.
When he is done, Miss Bingley, and Mrs Hurst go to the piano, and start playing some tunes. During this, Elizabeth can’t help to notice that Darcy is watching her. She doesn’t understand why as she still thinks that he doesn’t like her. After a couple of songs however, he asks her to dance, but Elizabeth, being herself, refuses as it is more fun to go against the grain. The looks and interactions between Elizabeth and Darcy sparks some jealousy from Miss Bingley…
