Summary:
Mr Bingley has been round to visit, but the girls saw nothing of his face, only his blue coat and his black horse. There are rumours that Bingley is bringing a large party of 2 dozen or so people to the town dance which greatly disheartens the girls, believing that they won’t get to dance with him. When the ball actually happens, Bingley enters with only 5 people however, his two sisters, one of their husbands, and a tall incredibly handsome man, who is found out to be called Darcy. For half of the evening, he is the talk of the ball, but soon after, his good looks and great fortune fail to make up for his personality. Darcy danced twice, once with each of the women in his party, while Bingley dances the whole evening, and even dances with one of the Bennet daughters, Jane, twice! Elizabeth Bennet is forced to sit out several dances as there are not enough men to dance with and overhears a conversation between Bingley and Darcy. Darcy slights the girls at the ball, even after catching Elizabeth’s eye, refuses to dance with anyone that he doesn’t know.
