In this episode of The Future Of, Sean McDowell, Senior Vice President of Design and Innovation at MillerKnoll; Jim Kalbach, Chief Evangelist at Mural; and Rich Knepprath, Creative Director at Fresh Consulting, join host Jeff Dance to discuss the future of collaboration. They dive into best practices for effective hybrid workplace collaboration, tools for innovating collaboration today, as well as the evolution of work.

They Cover:

  • [10:00] - Effective collaboration in the digital hybrid workplace relies on tools like Mural that support clear communication. While we can convey intent through facial expressions in-person, ensuring such presence remotely is a challenge. The pandemic highlighted that work isn't tied to a fixed location anymore; we’ve moved from "going to work" at an office to collaborating across diverse places and times. This transition encourages us to rethink how, when, and where we collaborate.
  • [16:45] - Physical spaces undeniably impact collaboration. As we transition from traditional work environments to digital ones, the effectiveness of our workspaces varies. A notable shift is the move away from classic workplaces to more collaborative spaces, which has increased the demand for conference rooms and innovative solutions. With the growing sentiment of returning to offices, it's essential to remember that the fusion of digital and physical methods is our future.
  • [23:48] - When we foster a shared vision and trust within a team, collaboration thrives. However, the essence of collaboration has evolved from traditional office norms. Today, balance is key. Embracing asynchronous collaboration allows individuals to work at their unique pace and timing, boosting both efficiency and creativity.
  • [43:16] - Bridging the gap between the physical and digital realms doesn't mean waiting for the next big tool. Instead of waiting for perfection, we should use what's available now. By understanding your core needs, you can innovate with current tools, many of which are often overlooked. From AI to spatial audio and VR, there's so much you can do today without waiting for tomorrow.
  • [48:05] - As work evolves, terms like hybrid, tools, and async will be termed work. This new standard erases old boundaries, highlighting common sense and collaboration. But trust remains essential. With innovative minds at the forefront, we're optimizing current tools while transitioning from flat screens to holographic technology, virtual reality, and augmented reality, signaling an intertwined digital and physical future.
