HSAY 006 - Andrew Torba - Social Media Start-Up CEO | Entrepreneur | Free Speech Advocate | Millennial Background: "The people, all people, are why the social media platforms exist." Andrew Torba is a 25 year old Silicon Valley based entrepreneur with 5 years of experience in the technology space. Andrew was the Founder and CEO of AutomateAds.com which helps Facebook, Google Adwords, and Twitter advertisers automate the management of their ad spend budgets using artificial intelligence. Andrew and his team recently launched GAB, https://gab.ai/ the new People First / Free Speech Social Network . They are currently in closed Beta testing but the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. Highlights:
  • The challenges of being a third party developer working and attempting to solve problems in the Big Social ecosystem is not easy. API's change every 90 days. Innovation is nearly impossible
  • Developers have been treated poorly by Big Social
  • Building a Social Media platform that welcomes and support third party developers.
  • Second problem: Silicon Valley very difficult to be a Conservative
  • On-line and off-line very difficult to speak freely. A level of discomfort as a result. The importance of freedom of speech.
  • Gab's mission: Put people first and to promote free speech for everybody
  • Much bigger than any one person or one political party.
  • Pay to play advertising
  • The point of business is to provide solutions to problems and create value. Many of the Big Social companies have lost their way in the drive for shareholder value.
  • Up until this point there hasn't been an alternative to Facebook and Twitter although Snapchat is the remaining independent and has a large audience.
  • The lack of Conservative leadership in Silicon Valley. The need for someone to stand up not only for Conservatives but for everybody.
  • "The people, all people, are why the social media platforms exist."
  • The CEO sets the tone for the users of the platform whether you have 300,000 or 300M users.
  • People on the Left, Center and Right are all expressing disgust with the fact that censorship exists in Social Media today.
  • Different Communities growing in Gab - gamers, politics, sports, etc. It's important to encourage different types of influencers to join Gab and to bring their following with them.
  • Giving people the ability to monetize their content on Gab - a tipping, donation and/or subscription system.
  • Enable users to make real money while Gabbing all day.
  • Trends - possibly implementing AI and VR tools for content creation.
  • Mobile is crucially important and they are working on native IOS and Android applications
  • Open to feature and technology feedback from the Gab community.
  • Main focus is being ready for scale.
  • If you're looking at your phone you're not connected to the people with you're with. Make an effort to be present.
  • Getting out and exploring nature, setting the phone aside.
  • Studies that show there is a chemical reaction, dopamine is produced, in our brains to notifications.
  • Mike Cernovich blog post about "How to relax and clear your mind and focus".
  • Getting into a routine of starting the day working on yourself before getting into email, Social Media, notifications, etc. - Miracle Morning
  • "This is my life's work, my purpose".
  • There are no coincidences. Everything that lead up to this point prepared him for everything he is creating today.
