Plastic pollution is a prevalent and alarming issue in the world's oceans, with over 8 million metric tons of plastic ending up in the oceans every year. While the problem may not be as visible in some countries, plastic pollution affects marine life and ecosystems globally. Microplastics, which are tiny particles of broken-down plastic, are particularly concerning as they can be consumed by marine organisms and make their way up the food chain, eventually reaching humans. Plastic pollution also poses a threat to coral reefs, entangling and harming marine life. Solutions to plastic pollution include advocating for government action, such as bag bans and straw bans, as well as individual actions like using reusable containers and reducing plastic consumption.
