On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. But as I leaned into prayer and asked God for guidance, He led me toward the word “Grace.” I realized that while it’s empowering to step into our strength, there’s also a divine need for grace in this season—for ourselves, for our journeys, and most importantly, God’s grace in every part of our lives. In This Episode, I’ll Share: Reflections on the Midlife Empress Journey: The heart behind Midlife Empress and how it empowered women to become the “empresses” of their lives, from health to mindset and everything in between. How God Inspired the Transition to Midlife Grace: How a season of prayer and reflection revealed that my mission was evolving—and that this podcast needed to reflect the grace God was placing in my heart. The Mission of The Midlife Grace Podcast: What “Midlife Grace” stands for and how it represents a place for faith, growth, and learning to trust God through every twist and turn of midlife. What You Can Expect Going Forward: A sneak peek at some of the faith-based, grace-filled topics we’ll cover as we continue to explore midlife with honesty, strength, and a deep sense of faith. Featured Scriptures: Throughout this episode, I share scriptures that guided me through this transition and reminded me of God’s plan and His unending grace: Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you…” 2 Corinthians 12:9 – “My grace is sufficient for you…” Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…” 1 Corinthians 15:10 – “But by the grace of God, I am what I am…” Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” Thank you for being part of this journey and for the grace you’ve shown me as I step into this new season. I hope this episode encourages you to walk in God’s grace and reminds you that His love covers every part of your life. Let’s continue this journey together, embracing all that midlife and faith have to offer. In this episode, we have a special guest, Dr. Naomi Hall, who shares her powerful story of overcoming burnout and extreme stress. As an educator with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Hall opens up about how she felt like she was drowning under the weight of her responsibilities. Through her personal journey, she realized the importance of taking control and decided to start her own business to help others shorten the learning curve when it comes to managing stress and avoiding burnout. Dr. Hall explains the Five Pillars of Foundation, a framework she uses to build lasting habits and heal from the inside out. She emphasizes the importance of dedicating time to internal work, focusing on foundational habits that lead to long-term resilience. Not only does she provide practical, actionable steps, but she also shares insights into how to avoid crashing again by reinforcing your internal foundation and addressing cracks before they widen. Throughout the conversation, Ginger highlights the importance of confronting suppression. Rather than holding things in, we must face and work through the emotions and challenges that weigh us down. Dr. Hall elaborates on the idea of "cracks" in our foundations—those hidden issues that, if left unaddressed, can lead to deeper burnout. Together, they offer listeners a clear path to recognizing stress triggers, healing from the inside out, and fortifying their personal foundations to prevent future burnout. This episode serves as a guide to not only recognizing the signs of burnout but also resolving it through practical, foundational habits that lead to a stronger, more balanced life. www.therecoveringeducator@gmail.com FB and IG @naomihallfiteducator www.nrhdynamic.com naomi@nrhdynamic.c Naomi Hall - The Recovering Educator | LinkedIn Free download: 5 Foundations of Stress Management. Brittany shares her personal journey from studying nutrition to becoming a coach who helps women, especially those deeply affected by diet culture, navigate their struggles with food in a way that encourages self-compassion and breaks free from guilt and shame. Together, Ginger and Brittany explore the harmful impact of diet culture, which often leads women to develop an unhealthy mindset toward food. Brittany offers valuable insights into how women can break free from the diet mentality and begin cultivating a more positive and nourishing relationship with food and their bodies. She shares how incorporating spiritual principles into her coaching helps women move beyond guilt and shame, providing a supportive framework for building a healthier, more loving relationship with their bodies. Brittany emphasizes that women need to break free from these negative emotions and learn to enjoy food as part of a balanced, fulfilling life. Brittany shares practical strategies for recognizing and rejecting these cultural pressures, encouraging women to focus on overall well-being rather than the number on the scale. Episode Highlights: Brittany’s Journey: From her initial studies in nutrition to becoming a body image coach, Brittany shares her personal story of how she found her calling to help women heal their relationships with food. She shares how a faith-based approach to nutrition is not about restriction but about nurturing the body and spirit in a holistic, balanced way. In this episode, we are joined by a very special guest, Mel Mason, who is widely recognized as the Clutter Expert. Mel believes that the clutter in our physical spaces is often a reflection of the emotional clutter we carry within ourselves. She shares a powerful and deeply personal testimony about her journey of healing, which began after the tragic death of her brother while she was living in a residential treatment center for adolescents. Through this heartbreaking experience, Mel began to recognize the weight of her suppressed emotions and the need to confront the trauma she had long been avoiding. In this Episode Ginger delve into the The Impact of Menopause and Hormones on Sleep in journey through menopause, many of us find that sleep can become elusive, leaving us with more than just tired eyes. We’re talking about brain fog, disrupted circadian rhythms, and those frustrating nights spent tossing and turning. But fear not! We’re going to explore how menopause and hormones impact our sleep, discuss natural supplements that can help clear the mental haze, and share tips on balancing our circadian rhythms. Let’s get started!" The Impact of Menopause and Hormones on Sleep "Menopause is a time of significant hormonal changes, with estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuating and eventually declining. These hormonal shifts can wreak havoc on your sleep. Estrogen, for instance, has a calming effect on the brain and helps regulate body temperature. When estrogen levels drop, you might experience hot flashes or night sweats, waking you up in the middle of the night. Progesterone, often called the 'calming hormone,' plays a crucial role in promoting restful sleep. As its levels decrease, you might find it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep. This can lead to fragmented sleep, leaving you feeling unrested and struggling with brain fog during the day. Melatonin production also declines with age, further disrupting your sleep-wake cycle. Without enough melatonin, it can be challenging to fall asleep at night and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning." Supplements to Combat Brain Fog and Improve Sleep "Brain fog, a common symptom during menopause, can make it difficult to focus, remember things, or even think clearly. Fortunately, there are natural supplements that can help clear the fog and improve your sleep quality. Melatonin: As we mentioned earlier, melatonin is crucial for regulating sleep. Taking a melatonin supplement about 30 minutes before bed can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Magnesium: This mineral is known for its calming properties and can help reduce insomnia. Magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate are good forms to take before bed to relax your muscles and nervous system, promoting deeper, more restful sleep. GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid): GABA is a neurotransmitter that helps calm the brain. It’s particularly helpful if you find that racing thoughts are keeping you up at night. A GABA supplement can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): This supplement boosts serotonin levels, which in turn increases melatonin production. It’s beneficial for those who struggle with both sleep and mood, as serotonin is also a mood stabilizer. Ashwagandha: This adaptogenic herb helps reduce stress and anxiety, two common culprits of poor sleep. By lowering cortisol levels, ashwagandha helps promote a more relaxed state, making it easier to drift off to sleep." Balancing Your Circadian Rhythm Circadian rhythm—the body’s internal clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. As we age, this rhythm can become disrupted, making it harder to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Here are some ways to help reset and balance your circadian rhythm: Consistent Sleep Schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This consistency reinforces your circadian rhythm, helping you fall asleep and wake up more naturally. Morning Sunlight: Exposure to natural light in the morning helps regulate your circadian rhythm. Spend at least 15-30 minutes outside in the morning to help signal to your brain that it’s time to wake up and be alert. Neora- fit Calm and cleanse helps Relax, unwind and calm your mind before bedtime with this powerful powder! Blue light can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder for you to fall asleep. Consider using blue light filters or wearing blue light-blocking glasses in the evening. Mindful Eating: What and when you eat can affect your sleep. Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, as these can disrupt your sleep cycle. Instead, opt for a light snack if you’re hungry before bed—something that includes sleep-promoting nutrients like magnesium or tryptophan. gingermonceaux.com/fit-in-15/ eBook to help you mindful eat. Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Create a calming bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This could include reading, gentle stretching, meditation, or a warm bath.
