In the 1980s, there were only 63 Black films by, for, or about Black Americans. But in the 1990s, that number quadrupled, with 220 Black films making their way to cinema screens nationwide. What sparked this “Black New Wave?” Who blazed this path for contemporaries like Ava DuVernay, Kasi Lemmons and Jordan Peele? And how did these films transform American culture as a whole? Presenting The Class of 1989, a new limited-run series from pop culture critics Len Webb and Vincent Williams, hosts ...

With an estimated 100,000 tourists heading to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX, we’re exploring a classic American pastime: the tailgate. Most people think of tailgating as a time for sharing beers and team spirit. But in this episode, we find out why tailgating motivates so many people to travel — and get to the heart of its culture. In this episode, we look at the classic episode Whose Wife Is It Anyway? from Series 2. This is, as you will know if you listen to the Top Ten episodes show, my favourite all time episode of Minder. I know it is for some of you too or at the very least, an episode you like a lot. I’ve wanted to do this one for a while and have been building up titbits here and there ready to get down and look into it all at some point. As we featured location manager Dave Shanks last episode, I wanted to follow up with this one. And so I have put together as much as I can find regarding this episode and have – pardon the expression – blown myself away in terms of what I discovered. As usual with many Minder episodes, there was much more than met the eye. What appeared to be a straightforward comedy drama was anything but. This show is in three sections. Episode description, writing inspiration and finally we will cover the unusual material which links to the episode, including insight into the location used and why this was used, as well as lots of trivia relating to the episode. You may be wondering why the reference to Steptoe and Son so go ahead and listen in to find out all of the writing inspirations for Tony Hoare, as long as you’ve got nothing against irons. In this episode we feature an interview with Location Manager of 13 Minder episodes, Dave Shanks. This is a great insight into behind the scenes of Minder and taught me a lot I had never heard before – I hope it will do the same for you. For the full episode description please visit Minderpodcast.co.uk.…
In this episode we feature an interview with director of four episodes, Robert Young. Robert directed the first episode of Series 3, Dead Men Do Tell Tales , and three episodes in Series 4: Senior Citizen Caine , High Drains Pilferer and Windows . As I explain to him, I did try to find him early on when I started this podcast and finally managed to find the right agent and luckily Robert was receptive. During our talk he gives great insight into working with George Cole, and Dennis Waterman, especially George, and we discuss the uniqueness of one of the finest gentleman of all time in the world of television and film. Given Robert directed one of my favourite episodes, we go into that a little and he tells a great story about what really happened during the motorbike stunt scene towards the end of Senior Citizen Caine . We also find out why there was such a huge scene of smashing Windows in that particular episode – it was not what you might expect. Then there is a little on Patrick Malahide who was rather like his character which makes much more sense to me as time goes on. I recommend watching him in Hunted , the TV series from 2012. No one that evil could appear on this fine podcast surely? Robert also talks a little bit about fellow director Martin Campbell as well as some of the specifics about just how Minder was filmed, lending new insight into just a few of the reasons as to what made it so special. Simon Channing Williams is also given great credit for his work behind the scenes on the episodes which Robert directed. Simon was associate producer of 7 Minder episodes, all of which were in 1985 and included Minder on the Orient Express and one of my favourites, Arthur is Dead, Long Live Arthur . You can read more about him here . As Robert mentioned, Simon sadly passed away in 2009. The Minder Podcast is presented in association with The Fans of Minder website . In this episode we pay tribute to Andrew Payne and also give you a special exclusive mini interview with Colin Prockter who played Stevie in Series 2’s Caught in the Act, Fact (as well as Reggie in a later episode). I firstly wanted to tell you all about the new Minder annual which is currently out via Confessions Press . The annual is a real treat, very much in the style of the classic annuals from the 70s and 80s. Pete’s done a very good job of capturing the presentation perfectly. In the annual you will find some excellent artwork, a couple of fun quizzes, a few comic strips as well as several articles. They have drawn together some of the best pieces from the course of Minder history. There is even a story from Tony Hoare in there. Unless you are a collector of vintage TV magazines (and I know at least 2 people listening who are) then the chances are you will not have seen some of the material in there. And did I mention I wrote some new material for the book? With that in mind what I thought I would do is read my tribute with the obligatory clips to give you the full SP and pay homagein a second way. You can find the annual for purchase here . Pete asked if I wanted to contribute and I thought it was a good time to pay tribute to Andrew Payne. I also contributed a quiz to the annual. Onto Colin Prockter . I contacted him directly after tracking down his details and was lucky enough to receive a reply. Most people are not so honest so full credit to Colin for what he said. Here I read Colin’s emails to me where he mentions being in the very first Sweeney episode. This was also directed by Terry Green who coincidentally directed Caught in the Act, Fact, the Minder episode Colin tells me a story about. So listen in for more on Andrew Payne and his top five episodes and a Colin Prockter exclusive.…
In this episode we feature an exclusive interview with Stuart St Paul who appeared in the classic Whose Wife Is It Anyway ? from Series 2 of Minder. It was a small part but I could not resist speaking with Stuart as not only did he appear in one of – if not the – best of episodes, but he was also later the stuntman for Dennis Waterman in Stay Lucky . In fact Stuart started out as a stuntman which was helped greatly by his background in martial arts. He was also assistant to both Tony Blackburn and Noel Edmonds on radio and eventually took over the Steve Wright show as Steve moved to Radio 1. Later he would play the Queen Alien for James Cameron. He did three Bond films, and was in the original Batman, Superman, and Robin Hood. He became a screenwriter and was a producer on The Krays as well as his own projects. His first screenplay sold straight into Hollywood and he eventually won the title of Best Director in the USA as well as awards around the globe. He stayed on as action advisor on many hit shows. The continuing ITV drama Emmerdale used him to help design the plane crash in 1993 and then retained him for another 26 years. Whilst at Emmerdale he worked with Alun Lewis and knew he had been in something with him before. How could Alun forget his old mate from the gay bar? We talk about the location and set up of the gay club in Whose Wife as well as some great insights into working on the show. Stuart has some great stories, not least of which is the tale about meeting with casting director Weston Drury Jr who saw something very unexpected during their meeting. We also get into a DJ voiceover part Stuart provided for another episode of Minder and speculate upon just which episode this may have been. This is a fun conversation about a classic episode and a wealth of other interesting material.…
In this episode we speak to camera grip for 53 episodes of Minder, Nick Pearson. Nick was behind the camera and at the technical helm for many classic episodes – from the very first to the last in Series 5 – and as you would expect has some terrific insight into how it all came together. Some standout topics include working with the greats such as Roy Ward Baker, Robert Young and Christopher King although with the latter he didn’t start out quite so impressively. There are the tales about drinking with the crew, the bond between Dennis and George, the building of the first Winchester Club bar and the trickiness of filming Dave the Barman. There is a lot about Euston Films itself and some episodes we go into quite a lot include The Bounty Hunter, Not A Bad Lad, Dad and Gunfight at the OK Laundrette. Nick kept saying O.K. Corral but I did not wish to correct him. I am sure he realised afterwards the retitling of the classic phrase for the Minder episode. When you look at the work Nick has done over the years it is spectacular. He has been involved with many major movies. So we are also treated to some wonderful stories about Tom Cruise, Brian DePalma and Nick being sacked from Mission Impossible. He tells of Jack Nicholson ad-libbing in Batman and how it was all captured perfectly on film as Nick says, “There’s a lot more to acting than just delivering the lines”. And then we lower the tone talking of the pleasures of The Benny Hill Show. We start with an explanation of what a grip actually does. Nick sent this through to me ahead of our chat which was useful to me and I shall read this for anyone else who needs some guidance as to all of the responsibilities a camera grip has. I also asked Nick whether he had any photos from his time on the Minder set and he sent me some fantastic material. These are going to be online with this episode on the minder podcast website so go and take a look. The outro to the show was recorded on the 8th May, two years after Dennis Waterman’s passing. If you haven’t already, please do go back and check out the tribute shows. I shall provide the links. It always amazes me that Dennis was 23 years younger than George Cole but lived 16 years less. I think this show is another nice tribute to the one and only Terry McCann and hoped you enjoy it. Thanks for listening and thanks for all the memories Dennis. Rest in peace.…
Welcome to episode 30 of the minder podcast in association with minder.org . I remember when the UK Gold TV channel I first came out that I thought it was great that certain TV programmes were being recognised as classics. And UK Gold also featured some more obscure works that were good to see on TV for the first time. Why do I mention this? Well, because the first word I thought of when being lucky enough to speak with Colin Farrell, akaTasty Tim, was this is Minder Gold. And it is no wonder several of you have written in to ask me to track down Tasty because he was in a very good episode, Around The Corner. We should also mention he was in a later episode from Series 9, with Gary Webster as well, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Retiring . But it is as Tasty Tim that many of you will have fond recollections so it is indeed a great honour to speak with Mr Farrell. As I mention to him during our interview, it was not for the lack of trying that we have not spoken before. In fact I was trying to track him down before I had ever received an email from a listener – he was on my top shortlist when I first booked interviews for the show. But he was elusive and here we have the crux of the issue, which we discuss in some humorous depth. For you may know there is another Colin Farrell, an Irish imposter, laying claim to the same name as the Colin Farrell who in recent years has gone by the name of Col to save confusion. But I will let Colin tell you all about it. What we certainly talk about in some depth is Colin’s role as Tasty in Around The Corner from Series 5. Filmed and released in early 1984 (broadcast as the Christmas Special on Boxing Day that year) it is a classic episode with a clever plot and some memorable clashes with the law not to mention a potentially unspeakable procedure applied to a greyhound. We talk about the filming and what it was like on set, why Tasty was so well dressed, as well as some highly welcome inside memories of George Cole. We examine his ability to play characters much younger than himself, his enduring marriage to Ann Penfold and his shenanigans as a youngster, as well as a memorable filming experience when he appeared in the epic Gandhi. So, ladies and gentlemen I am sure you will agree this really is Minder Gold. We’ve found the elusive, slippery Tasty Tim and found he is actually very well spoken and far more pleasant than his role in Minder may suggest, although he is such a good actor I probably still wouldn’t buy a video recorder from him. After the interview there are a few listener emails as well as news on the next few episodes.…
Welcome to episode 29 of The Minder Podcast in association with minder.org . In this episode we bring you a tribute to a man without whom Minder would have looked very different indeed. What would Minder have been without Dave the barman? A very underrated part of the main trio which made Minder famous: Arthur, Terry and Dave, Glynn Edwards was by all accounts very similar to his character. He liked a pint for one thing. So we will cover the life and times of Glynn Edwards, drawing together from as many sources as were available. If you had tried to find out more about Glynn you may have thought there was not too much out there. I know I did. Despite his many TV, film and theatre performances, the man himself was a bit of a mystery. Have you heard all this before? I hope not. But even if you are a treasure trove of knowledge when it comes to Glynn Edwards, this is the first audio tribute that covers it all. I think anyway. In the process of searching through everything I could about his life and career I realised there were many gaps and so – over the months (yes I have been working on this off and on since November last year!) I tried to complete the picture. Along the way I was lucky enough to enter into correspondence with Christine Pilgrim, Glynn’s second wife, after Yootha Joyce. We cover Glynn’s youth where he had a variety of placements and forms of work as well as his journey into becoming a full-time actor who only ever once had to sign on and that was in the early days. Within this show is everything from Marillion and Rich Tea biscuits to Shaft In Africa. Glynn was a true one off. Glynn appeared in 95 episodes of Minder, second only to George Cole who of course appeared in every one. The sheer variety and impressiveness of his other work really shines through – who can forget Zulu for instance? He was no one trick pony, appearing in The Paper Lads, Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, Get Carter, Dixon of Dock Green, Burke and Hare, Robbery and Steptoe and Son. He had hundreds of acting credits in TV, film amd theatre to his name and a rather exciting personal life too. He liked nothing more than sailing on a boat and even once invented a board game. Unusual man indeed in all the right ways. As Christine Pilgrim told me: “Glynn was a good man.” Although his acting credits were many and varied, Minder really did change his life. Gradually all other work took a back seat and all Glynn had to do was drive (or sometimes sail!) to the studio and take his rightful place behind the bar. As he would later say, “Minder is timeless.” So grab yourself a Vera and Philharmonic and sit back to reminisce over the wonderful Glynn Edwards.…

Happy new year to everyone. Hope you all had a great festive time. But now it’s back to work. In this episode we ease back in lightly with an interview with Dennis Waterman I came across recently which I had never seen before. It was given in 2000 in order to promote his book Reminder . You will most likely have heard our earlier episodes relating to Dennis; specifically episode 14 which was a life time tribute and episode 22 where we revisited the Reminder book itself and the Minder chapter. You don’t have to have heard those episodes to enjoy this interview but I do recommend it as they do go well together which is why I am publishing this interview. It is also one of the better and more in depth interviews with Dennis. Most other interviews are either shorter or he was less interested in opening up. Here, perhaps surprisingly, it seems like he and Vanessa Feltz actually get on ok and this leads to typical honesty along with her interesting responses. It’s a very enjoyable conversation and does connect with aspects of Dennis’ life I have mentioned earlier, particularly his love life. There are some nice references to Minder of course so I am sure you will find this worthwhile. The interview was originally televised on BBC One London at 14:50 on Wednesday 6th December 2000. Stay tuned at the end of the show for two tributes to Minder contributors who recently passed. We also have listener emails and an update on likely future guests, including why Patrick Malahide might never appear on this show.…

This one is a little different as you will no doubt have seen. So what’s occurring, what’s this all about? Well, I have had a few requests for doing an episode deep dive and wasn’t sure if I wanted to start that process as it could become addictive. After all, there are 109 to play with. But sometimes you come across something that you didn’t expect from a surprising source and in this case it made me think this was one episode I could do that with. My wife, legend that she is, recently came back from the second hand book shop with a book called The Enforcer , written by Albert Donoghue (with Martin Short). What jumped out at me when reading the book was chapter nine, Big Frank Meets The Big Sleep . Not only is it an incredible account of what actually happened to Big or ‘Mad’ Frank Mitchell but it is also an astonishing retelling of most of the Looking For Micky plot! Or should I say, pre-telling, because this occurred in 1966. So if you are a fan of the episode from series 3, you’ll love this. For full details on the episode visit the Minder Podcast website!…
Welcome to episode 26 of The Minder Podcast in association with minder.org . What red blooded male would not love to have met Debbie Arnold in the 80s? Much less spoken to her for an hour. Well, it’s 2023 and Debbie is still as lovely as ever. There is a photo of Royce Mills – Arthur’s accountant – on the Minder Podcast website. Go and take a look but that’s the face. Best of all she is a great guest with several stories. So here we have a great chat with Debbie about the two episodes of Minder she appeared in – both from 1985. They are of course Life in the fast food lane from series 6, which featured Jan Francis. And then the feature length classic, Minder on the Orient Express. We’ve spoken about this before but Debbie recalls some information which I am sure you have not heard anywhere else. There were times where she had me in fits of laughter which you can’t hear because I was so amused it came out as a silent laugh. Some highlights include the very different side to George Cole, a good few tidbits on Dennis Waterman as well of course as the actual filming of both episodes. We also cover Debbie’s amazing talent for voices and where that may have been inspired, her transferral from being a north easterner to speaking posh. An incredible revelation regarding Jenny Lee Wright, a very touching story about Kenneth Cope and a not so touching one (much to his disappointment) on Michael Winner. Did you know Debbie was married to John Challis? I didn’t. We cover John Cleese, for two reasons. And the words 'basque', 'suspenders', 'Jim Davidson', 'Benny Hill', and 'no camera up the bum' are also mentioned. Plus Debbie’s ability to charm older men, which to come full circle, I guess now includes me compared to the 80s. So if you don’t want to listen to the interview after that introduction you’re in the wrong place. Otherwise, here is episode 26 of the Minder podcast in association with minder.org.…

This time we feature an exclusive interview with Kevork Malikyan, the very recognisable face of a variety of starring side roles, from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to Midnight Express . Let’s not forget Mind Your Language and The Professionals . From his very first role on screen in 1968’s Portrait of a Lady , Kevork has starred alongside acting greats, in that series he appeared with Edward Fox and Kathleen Byron. Here we are mainly concerned with Aces High and Sometimes Very Low with also a shorter appearance in The Immaculate Contraption from Series 10. In fact, as I tell Kevork, I am fairly sure he is the only actor who appeared in both Series 1 and 10, certainly in a featured role. This might be one of the most recollections of any guest so far, especially as we are talking 1979. As you will know if you listened to my top 10 Minder episodes, Aces High is one of my favourite episodes and if it weren’t for having the other Anthony Valentine episode ranked I would have placed it in the top ten. I am sure it is an episode many of you rate highly and if so, you will love this interview. All sorts of interesting information comes up in this episode. Were the actors playing cards for real? How similar was Anthony Valentine to Maurice Michaelson? Why was Dennis Waterman so lovely and yet very mean and hard? And then there is the time during The Professionals where Kevork fell out of the back of the van. We also talk about the varied types of culture that existed both in 1979 right up to today.…

This time we feature an exclusive interview with a very well known actress, particularly in the 80’s, Maureen O’Farrell. It took me a while to track Maureen down but once I realised she had changed her name to Sara Farouk Ahmed it was a little easier. You would not think it was easier to reach an actress who became a belly dancer and moved to Egypt than say someone in the UK with agency representation, but it actually was. So a big thank you to Maureen for this exclusive. Maureen appeared in episode 10 of series 4, the wonderful Get Daley – and as you can see above she was the star guest of this episode. Get Daley is a great episode full of fantastic one liners and a couple of very interesting plots. Maureen can tell a few tales about the show. There is also a lot of inside information on working with Dennis Waterman , with Rula Lenska on set, and spending the day with George Cole and his wife Penny Morrell . Not to mention the experiences of being a working class actress. And then there is the fabulous Euston Films series Widows . In fact Maureen is still best remembered today by many as Linda Pirelli. The first series was directed by Minder legend Ian Toynton so we talk about him a lot. Ian directed nine episodes of Minder and was also Associate Producer. There is also a lot of info on what went on behind the scenes between series one and two of Widows and the change from Ian Toynton to replacement director Paul Annett. Not to mention what happened to Harry Rawlins, that is Maurice O’Connell. Then there is the philosophy of Brian Cox. Meeting Christopher Ellison in an oyster bar. Not to mention how it was working with the Euston Films crew. Finally, which actors were “supremely professional and lovely” on the set of Minder? The answer may surprise you.…

Welcome to episode 23 of The Minder Podcast in association with minder.org . For our two-year anniversary of the show it’s time to honour one of the best characters in Minder history. This episode is something a little different, part tribute and part enquiry – we are going to look at the very special Diana Malin and her character of Debbie Mitchell, as well as attempt to piece together where she might be today. As you might imagine piecing together a history of Diana Malin is awkward, given she stopped acting in 1987 and there is very little about her online. I did speak to a few people who knew her but they can only describe the person they knew in the 80s, and this was limited to Minder for the most part. In the episode we go through all of Diana’s appearances in the show as well as her other acting (and beautician!) work. You are in for a few surprises when it comes to the real Diana Malin. And speaking of the real Diana Malin – where is she today? In looking into both her history and her present there are several clues which have turned up. In this show I will share them with you. Full disclosure: one story in particular is a little unpleasant. And is it really even Diana? Listen and let me know your thoughts. One clue as to where Diana is came in 2014 and as promised in the episode, the photo is on website for the show. So who is the real Diana Malin and where is she today? Over to Debbie Does London for all the clues you’ll ever need.…

May 8th is of course the one year anniversary of Dennis Waterman’s passing. If you haven’t already done so you might want to listen to the tribute to Dennis released in June last year. In this episode we are going to look back at Dennis’ 2000 autobiography, Reminder, specifically the chapter on Minder. The book, written with Dennis’ manager Deke Arlon’s wife Jill was, as I mentioned in the tribute episode, a little disappointing at the time of release. It seemed to have too many contributions from others for an autobiography and it was very light on the Minder material. However, I reread the book at the beginning of the year and enjoyed it much more than previously. Perhaps with having more context myself it just made a little more sense. By and large the contributions from others do help the story Dennis tries to tell though often the book is at its best when the subject takes over and reveals his own experiences. What disappointed me initially was the fact there were only recollections from a few episodes and very little from behind the scenes. This is still quite disappointing but it’s still a useful overview of the show and how it came to be made. In this episode I read the Minder chapter in full so if you don’t have the book you can hear some of the inside take on the show. Some of this material follows on well from the Leon Griffiths tribute also. If you do have the book then perhaps this might be a nice reminder for you. I am also aware there is an audio version of the book read by Dennis himself. I have not heard it in full but as far as I know there is quite a bit of material missing. I think this might be the inclusions from others so if anyone has the audio version let me know. But this is definitely the full Minder chapter coming up with just a very small amount of editing. The material is copyright Arrow Books, 2000. I also want to address the way Dennis seemed to have an aversion to talking about Minder for so long. He obviously knew he had to cover it in his book and seemed to begrudgingly do so. For many years I have wondered just what he had against the show. After all it seemed to underline his already magnificent career. Everyone loved the show, what’s not to like? He even went on to reinvent himself with New Tricks and have yet another golden series loved by the public. So why did he want to move on so much from Minder – what exactly was it that he didn’t want to relive? After reading the book in full the answer to me was obvious and it had nothing to do with Minder. When the chapter finishes I cover the reason for Dennis’ negative opinion on the show. It’s just my opinion of course but it makes much more sense than Dennis having an aversion to the show continuing past its best. So, in tribute to Dennis Waterman once again and in honour of some fascinating insight into Minder, here is Revisiting Reminder.…
