In this episode, continuing our mini-series to celebrate World Breastfeeding Month, Yamel speaks to mom of twins, Emily, about her breastfeeding journey. Emily is a birth doula of 13 years and is also a Lamaze childbirth educator and lactation counsellor. She holds a Masters degree in public health and in anthropology, and has worked in child healthcare quality improvement for over a decade.

In this episode, Emily shares her story of her own breastfeeding journey with her twin boys, discussing the challenges she faced including supply and latch issues, how she navigated these, and her feelings of joy and wonder when she achieved her breastfeeding goals and was able to tandem breastfeed her twins. Yamel and Emily discuss how breastfeeding challenges can take their toll on mental health and the importance of self-care, and offer up their advice regarding what they wish they’d known as pregnant mothers to help prepare them for their breastfeeding journeys.

Keep in touch and in the loop with Yamel on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Tune into this episode to hear Emily’s and Yamel’s advice for breastfeeding twins, including:

Having a clear goal in mind

Yamel always advises her lactation clients to have a clear goal in mind when trying to overcome any breastfeeding challenges, as it’s so important for your mental health to try and make your breastfeeding journey align with at least some of what you had envisaged, and it means the people around you can support you in the right way, rather than offering advice that may conflict with your goals. This is something that resonates with Emily, who had clear goals at the beginning of her journey breastfeeding her twins, and ultimately achieved them.

Reaching out for help and having a support system

Having a support system is so important, whether this is your partner, family or professional help that you seek, and both Emily and Yamel reached out for help when they themselves experienced challenges.
