Welcome back to the Multifamily Wealth Podcast, where we dive deep into the intricacies of investing in multifamily properties. Today, we had the pleasure of speaking with McLane Hill, a seasoned multifamily appraiser from Boston, Massachusetts.
McLane Hill is a multifamily-specific appraiser with extensive experience in the industry. After graduating from Trinity College in Connecticut, he began his career as a research analyst and has since worked on a wide range of appraisal assignments. Currently part of Cushman & Wakefield, McLane specializes in multifamily assets and provides valuable insights into the appraisal process.
McLane shared his insights on how multifamily investors can best prepare for an appraisal, ensuring they present their property in the best light to maximize its appraised value. We discussed the importance of transparency and providing detailed data, such as rent rolls, historical financials, and a list of capital improvements. McLane emphasized that the more information an owner can provide, the less subjective the appraisal process becomes.
In this episode we discuss:

  • The role of an appraiser in the real estate investing process
  • How to prepare for an appraisal to ensure the best possible outcome
  • The importance of providing detailed property information and financials
  • What appraisers look for during a property site visit
  • How to work effectively with appraisers and understand the data they use
  • Tips for maximizing property value before refinancing or selling
