At some point or another, everyone heard this piece of advice: “Do what your passionate about and you’ll never have to work another day in your life!” I always rolled my eyes when I heard that. It always made me wonder if work is something we should be trying to escape…

In this episode, my nurse wife, Lexa, and optometrist brother, Dr. Anthony Cortes, join me to discuss a topic that many people struggle with: WORK! Have you noticed that in society, work is often perceived as a burden? This is the toxic idea that work is merely an oppressive means to make a living. While that may be true about some kinds of work, this isn’t true about work as a whole. Maybe we confuse WORK with JOBS. Those are not interchangeable! Because of this misconception about work being oppressive, people spend their whole life depressed about their current circumstance, looking toward retirement as their only saving grace. Others spend hundreds of dollars on courses from online gurus that promise fully passive income without putting much effort in.

However, the Bible takes a much different approach to work. We discover that God assigned it to us even at creation as a blessing!

“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23 NIV

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 NIV

Of course, we’re not talking about unproductive labor or fruitless busy work, but rather a means to bring profit and take care of people and world around us. By reframing the way we think about work, we can find purpose and fulfillment in our careers!
