Have you ever felt like there is just TOO MUCH TO DO! How can you possibly get it all done - especially when you feel drained after working in healthcare?
Let's talk about ways to set ourselves up for success once we get home from work - I want to focus on those of us who work 3 twelve-hour shifts every week. Some people think it's a great schedule that optimizes our productivity because we get 4 full days off every week! For others, it feels like we can NEVER get anything done because the job duty tires us so much and it always feels like work days interrupt our weekly flow!
Here are my three tips to get the most done during the week:
Tip #1 - GET ENOUGH REST

  • Sleep as soon as you get home, don't stay up watching reruns of your favorite show or scrolling social media.
  • Keep an evening routine, avoid sugary foods/caffeine.
  • For nightshifters, I recommend working your 3 shifts back-to-back as much as possible. I always found that sleeping half a day to switch back to a day schedule for the next four days would be ideal. Our bodies were designed to function DURING THE DAY!

Tip #2 - HAVE A PLAN

  • Even if you don't get it all one, you'll have more success!
  • KEEP A ROUTINE! Get a planner, work with a To-Do list, map out your month with a calendar, etc. The people who stay organized get the most done.
  • Get an accountability partner who will call you out when you don't stay true to your own commitments.

Tip #3 - DEFINE PRODUCTIVITY

  • This probably should have been the first tip... but you HAVE TO define what it means to be productive for YOU. If you purpose to take it slow the day after your shift, FINE. Just make sure you're being intentional about your time.
  • When you DO what you SAY you will do, it gives you a sense of control over your life and brings fulfillment and joy to your soul.
  • Remember to keep a balance - don't just do what you say you'll do... make sure that your actions will bring you growth and development in the end.

Another reminder: it's okay to NOT hit 100% of your goals every day… just don't put up a zero. Most of the time, consistency is more important than the intensity of your work.
At the end of the day, my hope is that this episode will remind you that even though it's okay to commit yourself to your employer, remember not to leave your own hopes and dreams to die because you are too exhausted to work on yourself when you clock out. If all our best is poured out on the work we do for our jobs, there will never be anything left when we come home to face what really matters -- our personal life.
What other tips can you think of? Let me know!
