In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Pip Houghton, a family doctor and maternal mental health advocate to discuss:

  • Dr. Pip’s personal experience with postpartum mental health struggles
  • Societal and cultural pressures of being a new mom/parent
  • Signs that your mental health may be “unwell” postpartum
  • Suggestions to help you check in with what your needs and wants are
  • Ways to ask for help from the people around you and with your health care provider
  • The relationship between physical and mental health
  • Trends that I see as a physiotherapist who works with perinatal clients
  • Actionable steps for those that care for the perinatal population and for new moms listening

Dr. Houghton is a rural family doctor with a passion for supporting new mamas and a special interest in perinatal mental health care. She is dedicated to providing evidence-based content on perinatal mental health and the common issues that women and families face in pregnancy the first postpartum year. Her hope is that through education and advocacy women will feel more supported and less alone as they navigate their transition to motherhood.
