“To aspire is to strive towards a goal. To aspirate is to breathe. Breathing is just striving toward life.”

-Emmett, In Body I Trust

In my last episode (37), I touched on how I often struggle with over-exercising and over-contemplating my food choices. Body dysmorphia takes up a lot of space in my personal baggage and is something I constantly work to overcome. In part, (to paraphrase the NIH) “addiction is a chronic, relapsing disorder that has been characterized by compulsion, loss of control, and emergence of a negative emotional state.” Eating disorders can certainly fall into one (or all) of these buckets, and I personally believe that this branch of addiction and recovery should not be overlooked. Thus, when I learned about author Lauren Dow’s work, I was compelled to reach out.

Lauren is on a recovery journey of her own, as someone who was very recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has struggled with food. In her own words, “In 2018, I was diagnosed with an eating disorder and have been navigating a world of major depression and anxiety for over a decade. In 2020, my mental health hit rock bottom when I attempted to take my own life…but when I faced the darkest parts of myself, I had to make one incredibly important decision: I had to choose to live.” Through extensive therapy, writing, and her advocacy work, Lauren is finding her inner strength to be her most powerful tool- and she has earned every ounce. She is not immune to bad days or moments of sadness, for sure, but the Lauren I talk to this week is honest, charismatic, immensely intelligent, funny….and radiates kindness. And it wasn’t only toward me, but toward herself, I could tell. It emanates from her very being, and I appreciated her gentle nature and how she educates the audience on self-awareness and how to let your guard down, if only for a moment, and reach out for help.

In Body I Trust is a remarkable novel based on Lauren’s personal experience, and we will discuss it at length- but you should definitely read it!!! Also, please visit laurendow.com to view more on her journey, read her blog, listen to her podcast, view resources, and more! I cannot say enough good things about this lovely human…except that I am so grateful for her inner warrior and that she is here today to tell her story. She is most certainly striving toward life.
