Generation Z

Ricky, part of Generation Z, is standing in for Seany-Mac. Listen to find out why Sean is not recording with Two Men and a Mic Podcast! Find out if preaching is better than teaching? Are they the same?

Know the Signs. Find the Words. Reach Out.

Sometimes, a suicidal person might feel relief that they have finally come to a decision – the emotional conflict over living or dying has been resolved. The best way to determine if a person’s improved mood is related to decreased or increased risk of suicide is to have a direct and open discussion about suicide.

Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington

In what she said was the “most personal tweet” she’s ever shared, Talinda Bennington, wife of Chester Bennington, posted a video of Chester laughing just 36 hours before his death.

This was something Talinda Bennington also said of her late husband Chester Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park who died by suicide last July.

“He was at his best before he passed,” Bennington said at CNN’s Town Hall about suicide last week. “We were on a family vacation… He’s had past attempts, but this wasn’t the time any of us expected this to happen.”

In September, Bennington shared a video of her late husband laughing and captioned it, “This is what depression looked like to us just 36 hrs b4 his death. He loved us SO much & we loved him.”

Suicide doesn’t always have a “look,” and it’s important to continue to reach out if you are worried about your loved one.

Tessa Thompson comes out as bisexual, says she loves Janelle Monae “deeply”

“Westworld” actress Tessa Thompson revealed that she is bisexual in a new interview with Porter magazine, months after rumored girlfriend Janelle Monae came out as pansexual. Thompson also spoke about her relationship with Monae.

Janelle Monáe comes out as ‘pansexual.’ What does that mean?

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae

In a Rolling Stone cover story, Janelle Monáe came out as “pansexual.” After identifying as bisexual, Monáe says that once she read about pansexuality, she realized: “ ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

If this is the first time you’ve heard this term, let us translate.

GLAAD puts pansexuality under the bisexual umbrella, defining the term as “anyone attracted to people of all genders or sexes, or regardless of sex or gender.” Some people use the labels bisexual and pansexual interchangeably, says Kate Estrop, president of the Bisexual Resource Center’s board of directors. “Pansexual came out of the complication people had with ‘bi’ implying binary,” Estrop adds. Either term can include attraction beyond the male-female gender binary, to those who are trans, gender-fluid, androgynous, intersex and more.

People define “pansexual” in varying ways. For example, sexologist Carol Queen tells Vogue Magazine that “pansexual people do not desire everybody, they just don’t rule a person out because of gender,” adding that “there is no exact definition of this term.”

Trendy Teenage Girl

Entrepreneurism is on the rise, with a higher number of Millennials starting and running their own businesses than their parents before them. (Source: BNP Paribas, Global Entrepreneurs Report, 2016) But what of the generation after them — those born after 1997? They may be a bit young for formal work trend studies, but there are already signs they’re just as (if not more) capable of great things.

Gen Zers, Centennials, post-Millennials — whatever you want to call them — are independent, out-of-the-box thinkers. This will translate to talented employees who can affect organizational change and help companies stay competitive in the future. Businesses that start shifting their culture toward Generation Z’s preferences can attract and retain some of this up-and-coming talent.

Why Gen Zers will drive your future growth

Gen Zers are ambitious: Nearly three-quarters of high schoolers expect to start their own business someday. (Source: Millennial Branding and Internships.com, High School Careers, 2014) Seventy percent have jobs best described as self-employed, versus traditional teen jobs prior generations held. (Source: Harvard Business Review, Why Today’s Teens Are More Entrepreneurial than Their Parents, 2015) Gen Zers are selling items on their own eBay store, teaching music lessons, and running their own businesses babysitting or walking dogs.

Becoming Gen Z Friendly

As an employer, your focus should be offering an environment that doesn’t stifle or reject this generation’s new norms for workplace interactions. To achieve this, start here:

Teaching or Preaching?

The Rise Of Preaching (More Than Teaching)

Another curious trend I’ve seen is that the next generation of preachers (under 40s) seem to preach more than they teach.

It’s always hard to define the exact difference between the two, but simply put, preaching speaks more to the heart, teaching speaks more to the head.

Preachers facilitate an experience. Teachers convey information.

I think the best pastors do both well.

Preaching without solid teaching can become emotionalism. Teaching without preaching can become intellectualism.

Preaching leads people to say ‘That’s right. I need to change.” Teaching can lead people to say “He’s right. That’s a good point.”

I default toward teaching so this is a challenge for me.

Try to find an under-40 influential pastor of a growing church who’s more into teaching than preaching. There really aren’t that many.
