Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain which allows brain cells to communicate with each other. It's associated with the reward system and plays a big role in memory, mood, motivation, working towards goals and how we learn. In ADHD, Dopamine levels are lower than in the neurotypical brain, so people with ADHD are constantly seeking big Dopamine hits. This leads to inattention, impulsivity, engaging in risky behaviour and the need for instant gratification. I'm going to look at 8 common potentially problematic ways that people with ADHD go Dopamine seeking: Alcohol and drug taking Behavioural addiction such as gambling, sex, gaming and social media Binge eating Novelty seeking Making impulsive, unwise decisions Impulsive spending The Internet rabbit hole Engaging in risky behaviours Tomorrow I'll be talking about positive ways to use Dopamine seeking.
