How I Learned to Hate My Body: Overcoming Body Dysmorphia in the LGBTQ+ Community
Manage episode 372612095 series 3485474
This is the start of a long and sometimes difficult conversation. Though it’s different from our normal episodes, it’s clear that this is very important to many of us! I didn’t realize until recently that struggling with body image is a common thread amongst much of the LGBTQ+ community. I thought I was alone, but now I’m feeling empowered that there are others right here with me. Feeling seen and understood has helped me monumentally, and I want to talk about it.
I don’t like how I look and yet I stand here staring. In all honesty, I’ve struggled with body dysmorphia for most of my life and I only just recently have been able to put words to it.
In this episode we’re answering the questions: Where does body dysmorphia even come from? How can I learn to better love myself so I can truly be emotionally available to my family? What are the therapeutic tools in my kit to address feelings of inadequacy? What will we teach our kids about our bodies?
