WoHos!
This week we looked at two movies related to Ghosts: POLTERGEIST (1982) & THE OTHERS.
POLTERGEIST deals with the sins of capitalism and consumerism in the guise of some disruptove ghosties. Mac enjoyed this more than I did. I felt super sad at the depiction of the teenage daughter as an object of sexual attention and nothing much else.
Strong performances by JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Zelda Rubenstein, and Craig T. Nelson together with the gnarly practical effects are enough to recommend this film for both of us. We give it 4 TV's!
I was much more jazzed about the atmospheric THE OTHER by the ever-impressive filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar.
Mac and I split on the rewatchability of this film. What do you think?
I gave it 4.25 keys and Mac gave it a straight 4 keys.
This ep is tangent-heavy. We talk about oversharing strangers, materialism, the 80s and what should be left to the dustpin of history as well as ownership/property, photographing dead people, and the relationship between mind and body.
Coming up next are two special shows featuring friends of the show and esteemed WoHos, Stefan MacDonald discussing VIDEODROME and Martin Harries discussing DR. TERROR's HOUSE OF HORRORS.
On the next main show, we will be covering films about aliens: STARSHIP TROOPERS & SLASH/BACK.
Thank you for all your support. It Means the World of Horror™ to us, truly.
