Lydia thought she was helping a friend. She soon realized she was on the way to self-discovery of her own truth in this episode of Unspoken: Conversations with Candace.

Lydia was born and raised in Racine, she has two children, and has been in the banking industry all of her life. Although they’ve known each other since grade school, they became friends when they were 19, and they have been each other’s support since.

Listen to their conversation where they share memories of growing up and becoming adults, and talk about the impact of the book, fear, faith, spirituality, parenting, forgiveness, and much more.

Episode highlights:

14:05 – You had shared it with me years ago, so I knew. And then I shared with you, my story. When I read it, my first instinct was: Wow! She really put all this out there! It’s something I would never do. We’re two different people. We heal in different ways. I felt proud of you. But then, here comes that fear behind it. And I do not know why.

17:20 – You want your book to be an impact. So, when I read the demo of it, I wasn’t ready for that impact. And I think it opened up a lot in me that I wasn’t expecting to happen. Like: Wow, wait, I do not want to deal with this right now!

20:45 – It affects your parenting. It has affected mine, a lot. But I look back now and I think, subconsciously, without even realizing it, and it wasn’t planned, but I can honestly say I never gave my kids, either one of them, a stepfather.

29:25 – As far as forgiveness goes, I’m not 100% there. I’m probably about 60%. And that’s what I’m working on. My way.

32:45 – When you go through something, whether it’s a death of a parent (I went through that journey), or childhood abuse (I went through that journey), whatever happens to you in life that’s bad, and they say that “time heals”; well, it’s been 40 years, and, am I healed? No. Time does not heal all wounds. God heals you. But you have to take that responsibility and get that relationship with God.
