Pilates Alliance Podcast Season 1, Episode 03: Robyn Rix

In this first season of the Pilates Alliance Podcast series, Bruce Hildebrand of the Pilates Alliance of Australasia (PAA) talks to some of the committee.

Today it’s the turn of Treasurer and Public Officer of the PAA, Robyn Rix. Robyn is the founder and owner of Pilates Works on the lower North Shore of Sydney, holds a Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction, and is a second-generation Pilates instructor and trainer having graduated from the Pilates Master Mentor Program conducted by Lolita San Miguel in Florida.

Prior to becoming a Pilates instructor. Robyn worked in the financial services industry as an actuary, gaining broad experience in business management. Then, in a complete change of direction, Robyn completed a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. From there she went on to pursue a career in Pilates.

Robyn sees her role on the PAA Executive Committee as helping to develop a professional, cohesive, and supportive community that can continue to bring the joys and benefits of Pilates to as many people as possible.

[00:01:43] Robyn summarises the background to the Natural Therapies Review that led to the removal of health fund rebates for Pilates in 2019. She is on the current Natural Therapies Review Expert Advisory Panel (NTREAP) which is part of a second review. Robyn discusses some of the challenges in finding double blinded random control trials supporting the benefits of Pilates.

[00:03:33] Robyn mentions they submitted about 420 reviews showing evidence for Pilates across a broad range of conditions.

[00:03:55] Bruce asks for some takeaways from Robyn’s research.

[00:05:57] Robyn details some of the challenges for the Pilates industry.

[00:06:35] Bruce asks for an update of where the NTREAP conversation is up to and where it is going.

[00:09:00] Robyn gives more history behind the Natural Therapies Review, why they are being so meticulous and why it has been a drawn-out process.

[00:10:33] Bruce wonders if it is better for Pilates to be grouped with Natural Therapies or with Fitness and Movement.

[00:13:35] Robyn talks about the different pulls in the Pilates industry – towards bigger classes at one end and more specialisation at the other e.g., working with people who have Arthritis or Parkinson’s.

[00:15:27] Robyn mentions that the Australian Bureau of Statistics does not have an occupation code for Pilates instructors, which is something that the PAA is lobbying for and will help define whether Pilates sits within Health or Sport and Recreation.

[00:17:03] Robyn talks about the reason behind an accreditation framework and she and Bruce discuss how different types of Pilates appeal to different people and different stages of life.

[00:20:47] Robyn highlights the importance of connecting with clients, and the importance of touch.
