We listen in order to; 1. Help out (as a Consultant or Technician). 2. Get help. 3. Have a conversation/Debate. 4. Listening to music or entertainment/movies. "Listen with the intent to understand, not with the intent to reply". Negotiation is more about listening, to see what the issue is so that you can address it. As well, it helps you to connect, and thirdly will increase the chances of them listening to you. Active listening is to listen not only to "what is said", but also "what hasn't been said". Listening to not only the words but also behind the words/body language. In order to be able to listen to others, first we should be able to listen to ourselves, our thoughts and feelings. At the same time It's hard to listen to somebody, who doesn't speak. So questioning may be the way to get one talking. We have "talk shows" not "listening shows", we have "peace talks" but not "peace listening". Q: How do you listen? with the intention to respond or simply listen?
