65% of nurses say they are likely to leave the profession within the next two years.
WHY?! Could it be because many hospital jobs have elements of toxicity?
Today we're talking about the TOXICITY within nursing.
To be clear, when I say toxicity, I'm NOT referring to nursing itself as being toxic. I'm talking about some of the jobs within the profession and the awful reputation they bring - not to mention the harmful effects they have on our health and well-being.
There are many kinds of toxic elements that come from some of our healthcare jobs. I'm going to list them out and I'd like for you to pay close attention to see if you can determine whether your job matches most of these descriptions... if so, you are working at a TOXIC JOB within nursing and it's time to do something about it.
Here's my list of toxic workplace characteristics:
- Leadership neglect
- "Profit-over-people" approach to business
- Gossip/trash talking
- Lack of respect from employer - leading to poor work/life balance
- Extreme workload (short-staffed, unsafe nurse:patient ratios)
- Negative environment… rude people!
- Hierarchy/rankism
- Politics, discrimination, & coercion
- Awful coaching/mentoring (not enough training)
- Lack of transparency
- Unfair retribution
- Fear based motivation
The list goes on and on...
If you can relate to this list, you must do something to fight the toxicity.
Here is my 3-step process: Evaluate, Speak Up, and/or Leave.
Let's go through each one:
First up, EVALUATE: The first step is always self-reflection. Take personal responsibility for your contributions to any toxicity in your life/environment - if any. Then, study the situation and pin-point exactly where the toxic effects are coming from. Is it a certain person at work? A certain system? Try attacking that first! Prayer is always a great first step.
Second, SPEAK UP: As an advocate for yourself and others, you should NEVER keep quiet about toxicity in the workplace. Make sure you go through the appropriate channels to report your issue and do it with dignity and respect for all parties involved. This not only helps you, but those who don't have a strong voice. Remember to expect backlash. Although it can be very difficult to face, doing the right thing is always worth it.
Lastly, LEAVE: After giving it enough time, if you have not seen any changes, maybe it's best for you to move on in peace. Realize that bad environments create bad people. Sometimes, you simply CANNOT afford to stay. This will not only save your sanity, but it
