It is true that when ice cream sales go up we have more shark attacks. This is because they occur during the warmer months. However the correlation between the two has nothing to do with the causation that the shark attacks are because of the ice cream sale. We make the exact same mistake in other aspects of life. E.g. we call people of a certain race or gender criminals, terrorists or bad drivers.
Where the reason is not the race, there is no specific gene in that specific race or gender that causes the outcome and rather it is due to the culture, upbringing, economy and so on. Wrong conclusions results in wrong actions and feelings.
Q: Do you make this type of mistake and how do you want to solve it? My suggestion is simply ask more questions or say "I don't know" the reason but not draw a wrong conclusion.
