Hypoglycemia - Causes and How to Handle the Lows

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR DIABETES® - THE PODCAST! ...With Expert Endocrinologists Living with T1D, Drs. Steven V. Edelman & Jeremy Pettus

Hypoglycemia can be scary to discuss, but it’s one of the most important topics to be educated about when living with diabetes. Drs. E and P are sitting down to talk about what happens in the body to cause hypoglycemia, the different stages and symptoms of hypoglycemia, what the risk factors are, and how to best prevent and treat severe hypoglycemia. They’ll also cover the emotional and psychological toll fear of hypoglycemia can have and swap some of their “war” stories about severe lows that’s had in the past (or not so past!).

Questions We’ll Cover in This Episode:

  • Why are people with diabetes prone to hypoglycemia?
  • How does the body combat hypoglycemia for people with diabetes vs.people without diabetes?
  • What are the three stages of hypoglycemia?
  • What are the different mindsets of people who prefer to be low and are scared to be high? What about those who prefer to be high and are scared to get low?
  • How common is a severe hypoglycemic event?
  • Is A1c related to hypoglycemia?
  • What are the risk factors for severe hypoglycemia?
  • How can I prevent hypoglycemia?
  • How can I treat hypoglycemia?
