I really wanted to title this episode everything you need to know about perimenopause but unfortunately, 60 minutes isn't enough time to hit everything. Margot and I did a great job at introducing the changes that can happen in your body during perimenopause. We talk about how your hormonal changes can affect different parts of your body, and how working with a practitioner like Margot can help.
Margot Witteveen, MS, RDN, LDN, is a functional medicine dietitian and co-owner of Perfectly Portioned Wellness. PPW is a virtual private practice focusing on helping midlife women navigate peri to post-menopause. Margot and her team conduct full assessments on their clients to improve their digestion, get them sleeping again, help troubleshoot midlife metabolism and help sort through HRT (hormone replacement therapy) misinformation.
They have guided hundreds of women through there peri to post menopausal journey.
Their programs are the simplest most effective way to feel better, get your energy, body, and brain back without playing whack-a-mole with different strategies, supplements and diet
In this Episode:
- Perimenopause -hormone chaos which can affect your sleep, mood, gut health, energy, metabolism (weight gain), nutrition, and so much more
- What is happening hormonally during perimenopause
- 0-14 - surge in estrogen, day 14 ovulation,, signals body to release progesterone, actually have to ovulate to release progesterone (calming hormone, that helps lower anxiety, helps with sleep and stress management) so when we stop releasing it if we don't ovulate some months our hormones can become unbalanced and that can feel like ch_aos in our bodies
- Neurological symptoms - increase in anxiety, can't handle stress, can't sleep as well
- Physical symptoms - heavier periods, sore breasts, fibroids, mood swings
- Perimenopause happens long before menopause
- How to support your body during perimenopause build a good foundation of support
- Are you metabolizing estrogen? Liver, gall bladder, bowls?
- Gut health and the connection with hormonal changes and gut health changes
- Nutrition - are you eating enough? is your body stressed because you are undereating? fiber & protein?
- Exercise - Strength train (muscle is the organ of longevity)
- Replacing progesterone
- Hormone replacing therapy
- Hormones are not just for making babies
- Healing trauma so body feels safe - reiki, acupuncture, sound healing or whatever modality you feel drawn to
and so much more
