Jesus gave his life for those who were his enemies. When we were enemies in our minds and hearts toward God, Jesus sacrificed his life for us. When we were yet without strength Jesus died for us. He took upon himself the penalty of our transgressions. We have forgotten the forensic nature of the death of Christ. We have forgotten the reality of the doctrine of the substitutionary death of Jesus. We really were lost (destroyed) by sin, and Jesus saved us from eternal ruin!
