With the Rio Olympic Games in full swing, we’ve seen some amazing athletic performances. Still, I can’t ignore the dark cloud hovering over the games that seemed to grow darker and darker in the aftermath of the Beijing and London games.

This past week I spoke to Raf Korkowski, about some of the recent developments regarding Olympic Weightlifting in Rio. Raf is the head coach of my local weightlifting club here in Nanaimo - the Hercules Weightlifting Club, which has been functioning as the largest weightlifting club on the island since 2015.

From 2002-2005 Raf Korkowski, originally of Poland, represented the Canadian National team at the 2003 World University Championships in Italy, 2003 World Championships in Vancouver, Pan American Championships in 2004 and 2005, 2004 Titan Games in USA, and was an alternate for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He was the Manitoba Weightlifting Association Male Lifter of the Year from 1997 through to 2005, holds multiple Manitoba provincial records, Canada Games records, and titles as Western Canadian and National champion. Raf, a multi-sport athlete, was also a member of the University of Manitoba Bison Men’s Volleyball team from 1998-2002, winning 2 National Junior Championships and 2 CIS National Championships.
