The National Science Foundation SURGe Program is a 10-week intensive research experience under the mentorship of one of our Faculty of Genetics and Genomics members that includes a 3-credit hour Bioinformatics class. The credits are transferable to their home institution. Dr. Jeffrey Barrick is an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin where his research is focused on the development of methods to predict and stop unwanted evolution of microbes. Recently, his group has started to apply synthetic biology tools to manipulate bacterial endosymbionts of insects with an emphasis on those in honeybees and aphids.
