Mount Rainier Volunteer Nordic Patrol is discussed this episode with Dennis DuBois. He has been a part of the organization for more than ten years, so he is very educated on the subject.

The Nordic Patrol is in place for preventative search and rescue. In most cases, they deal with lost explorers or groups that have split up.

Winter explorers should be concerned and knowledgeable about avalanche safety and conditions. They might want a shovel, snow probe, Beacon, map of the are and the typical essentials.

Terrain selection is key. Dennis talks about the variety of terrain at Paradise. Some people want to head straight up to Camp Muir, but it one doesn’t need to go there on their first trip.

It is surprising how easy it is to get separated from your group. Nordic Patrol often heads out to find the missing party, who is looking for the other part of the party, who had reported in the first place.
