"My biggest weapon against this and for my daughter to have some type of normalcy and routine in her life has been through prayer. He has been my greatest ally.” —Kelly Porter

There are still plenty of negative stereotypes about what it means to be a man, and therefore how men should behave within relationships. And sometimes these negative stereotypes become part of the problem when it comes to domestic violence against men.

Because of this stigma around men, our society has a hard time believing that men, too, can be abused. As a result, men tend to shy away from openly voicing out their pain.

In addition, many men are reluctant to seek help for fear of being considered weak or unmanly. Another reason is that men may be less likely than women to recognize the signs of abuse or seek help because they don't feel comfortable talking about their feelings because of their background.

In this episode, Ann interviews a man, a father, and a victim of domestic abuse, Kelly Porter. Kelly speaks openly about his experience to help men like him to find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in the battle they face.

Listen in as Ann and Kelly discuss what it’s like to live with a partner that is addictive and abusive, how being abused as a child affects an individual growing up, what happens when the institutions that should help are deaf and blind, how to find the ray of hope amidst the seemingly unending storm, what you can do when your abuser calls you “the abuser”, and Kelly’s plea for help in his ongoing legal battle.
