This is an Encore Presentation of my February 2024 episode featuring Bert Berns and Nat Weiss, two giants of the music industry, yet both relatively unknown to the public. Bert Berns was one of the foremost songwriters and producers of pop and rhythm and blues in the ‘60s. His hits include “Twist And Shout”, which The Beatles took to international fame; “Piece Of My Heart”, Janis Joplin’s gigantic hit; “Hang On Sloopy”, the mega-hit for The McCoys; “Cry To Me”, a hit for Solomon Burke and later for The Rolling Stones; and “Tell Him”, a great early ‘60s hit for the Exciters. His producer credits include “Brown Eyed Girl”, Van Morrison’s first smash hit. Nat Weiss was a lawyer by training. He became the U.S. business partner of Brian Epstein, the manager of The Beatles, and was Brian’s right hand man in America for the band, including for all the merchandising opportunities coming their way. Nat expanded this relationship and began suggesting artists for Brian to manage, including The Cyrkle (“Red Rubber Ball”). Louis Langree is a celebrated French Conductor. He’s been the Musical DIrector of the Orchestre de Picardie, the Opera National de Lyon, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liege, the Camerata Salzburg and the Theatre National de L’Opera-Comique. In the U.S. he’s been the Conductor of the Mostly Mozart Festival and the Cincinnati Symphony. And he was made a Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. Tal Mashiach is a Grammy nominated, Israeli born, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and jazz composer. He’s been called one of the most original voices in the world jazz scene. He’s collaborated with a number of leading artists including Anat Cohen, her brother Avishai Cohen, and Paquito D’Rivera. Jesse became a San Francisco-based Counterculture Hero during the 1967 Summer Of Love with his massive hit “Get Together”. The song became an anthem for the Woodstock generation. He was a pioneer in folk and American roots music and an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. Matt Axton is an Americana and Roots singer-songwriter who comes from an illustrious musical family. His father was Hoyt Axton, who wrote some of the biggest hits of the 1960’s/70s including “Joy To The World” and “Never Been To Spain” for Three Dog Night, “The No No Song” for Ringo, and “The Pusher” for Steppenwolf. His mother Donna was the pianist in his dad’s band and is a professor of music. And Matt’s grandmother, Mae Boren Axton, co-wrote “Heartbreak Hotel”, Elvis’s first million selling single.
